Royal Blood are an English rock duo formed in Brighton, and consisting of lead vocalist and bass guitarist Mike Kerr, and drummer Ben Thatcher.

The pair first met in 2005 when they were teenagers, and formed Royal Blood early 2013 after Kerr returned from a sabbatical in Australia. According to Kerr, Royal Blood couldn’t get a gig in Worthing for months and ended up just playing a lot of open mic nights with acoustic singer songwriters.

The band were signed to Warner/Chappell Music while developing their music in the studios of Brighton Electrical and joined the same management company as Arctic Monkeys. Prior to the release of their first single Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders was seen wearing a shirt supporting Royal Blood during Arctic Monkeys Glastonbury Festival concert.

After releasing a few singles and a four-track EP, the duo released a self titled debut album August 25 2014.

“I went to hear them in New York. They were fantastic. Absolutely riveting, they’re such fine musicians. Their album has taken the genre up a serious few notches. It’s so refreshing to hear, because they play with the spirit of the things that have preceded them, but you can hear they’re going to take rock into a new realm – if they’re not already doing that. It’s music of tremendous quality.”

– Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin guitarist)

The sound of Royal Blood is one like any other “full” rock band, but produced by only a bassist and a drummer. If they can’t pull it off live, they don’t put it on record.
In saying they are “like other full rock bands,” they are in fact their own sound.

Mike Kerr said “The people who get us, they’re not on the same page necessarily [as each other]. From our live experiences, we can do Download and Reading and Glastonbury and the same people are behind us but they don’t necessarily all like rock.”

Personally I adore the sound and style of Royal Blood and I highly recommend them to anyone who asks. My flatmates (all very talented musicians) and I often sit around playing and singing their music, just jamming to it.

The duo are an excellent display of rock talent, sounding just as sterling live as they do on record. Their music is easy listening and beautiful to the ears.

Royal Blood recently announced their second album, How Did We Get So Dark?, due out June 16 2017.
